About Us

Our History

The first meeting of the North River Fire Brigade was held on March 8 1972 in the old school house in North River. At the meeting Ed Franklin was voted in as the Brigades first Fire Chief. A house to house canvas was held in April and $2461.65 was collected from the members of the community.

1972 to 1977

Also in April of 1972 a piece of land was donated to the brigade by Foster MacKenzie, where our current fire hall currently sits. In May a series of Logging bees were held on the land of Ronnie Horne, and was transported to Bill Gorman's mill, where the lumber was used to construct the new Fire hall. The first meeting was held in the new hall on Nov 29 1972. This consisted of 2 truck bays.

The only fire equipment the brigade had at this time was on loan from the Department of Lands and Forest and consisted of 500 feet of 1 ½ line and a wajax pump. This was stored on a half ton truck that was donated by Donald Roode.

In order for the brigade to raise funds, dances were held at the North River Elementary school as this was the only available public hall. In 1975 with the assistance of a grant, the fire brigades recreation hall was completed.

In 1977 the North River Fire Brigade ladies auxiliary was formed to support the brigade. They were always busy catering banquets and wedding receptions. The ladies auxiliary every year would make a donation to the brigade to assist in the purchasing of specialized equipment.

1979 to 2017

In 1979 the two halls were joined together, with the building of a third truck bay and an upstairs meeting room. In 1990 another addition to the rec hall was added which included a stage, a new kitchen and a basement recreation room for the members.

In 2014 the fire brigade took on a new role in the community as medical first responders. We trained 21 members as advanced medical first responders. The brigade responded to 35 medical related calls that year. In 2017 we upgraded our response status to include 95 percent of all emergency medical calls in our district. We saw our call volume increase to about 85 medical calls for the year.

In 2017 the membership realized the need to renovate the hall to allow for newer apparatus. The renovations included a new office, radio room, new public washrooms in the center of the old recreation hall. The public hall was re-finished. It also saw three new bays added that would allow for larger fire trucks. Also added to the apparatus floor was 2 member washrooms with showers for cleanup, post calls.

2018 to Present

In 2018 with the help of the Nova Scotia Emergency Services Provider Fund, the brigade was able to upgrade its aging breathing apparatus with 14 new MSA G1 45 minute packs, with 28 bottles.

In 2020 a global pandemic struck. The Coronavirus 19 affected people world wide. Emergency services were left without ways to fundraise making it difficult to purchase specialized equipment that regular tax rates would not cover. North River Fire was fortunate enough to get in on the Amherst FireFighters Association’s 50/50 online draw early on. To date with the generous support of community members purchasing tickets, $13,800 has been raised. These funds allowed us to take on a new role in the fire service.

Eight of our members went on training for vehicle extrication. Vehicle Stabilization jacks, struts and wedges, and hand tools were purchased.
